First off, that is a big step, so congrats! The first step is the practical stuff - give me a call and I will check that your insurance covers therapy. Private pay is an option if needed.
After we deal with that piece, we will schedule a quick 15-minute call to discuss services. I will ask a bit about what brought you to therapy, get some information for paperwork purposes, and you can ask me any questions. I think that knowing you and your therapist click is a huge factor in how successful therapy is for you, so ask me all the hard hitting questions!
We will then schedule a longer assessment appointment. Here I will ask you about your current concerns, but alot a ton of questions about you in general to get the whole picture. After this, we can create some goals for therapy and start sessions on a schedule that works for you.
In Minnesota, there is a special process for assessing mental health needs in children five and under. Not all therapists are trained in this process and even fewer do these assessments on a regular basis. Because children are complex and there are a ton of developmental factors that might impact their symptoms, these assessments require three visits in different settings.
I specialize in early childhood mental health and like working through the puzzle that is a young child's brain!
Yes and no. In my opinion, parenting is parenting, no matter how those children came into your life. At the same time, foster and adoptive parenting comes with unique challenges that might now be completely understood by other parents in your circle. Oftentimes, services in a foster/adoptive situation focus on the children, but the parents can get left behind. Let me shift the focus back to you and address your needs.
I worked in the child welfare system for over ten years and have tons of experience working with foster and adoptive parents. I have also completed extensive training in supporting foster/adoptive families in therapy.
Therapy services are available in person at my office in Clinton, MN or virtually anywhere in Minnesota.
